all programmers love rocking out. garageband has a ton of advanced features just under the surface. it's a good enough emulation of analog electronics that you can learn a lot about wave forms and effects from tweaking it. also, ableton live has a introductory product that's really affordable - it would be awesome to contrast the additive paradigm with the traditional sequential one and just show other rock star moves in live.
